Traffic Enforcements

The Just Stop Unjust Stops campaign, supported by our sister organizations Long Island Advocates for Police Accountability (LIAFPA) and United for Justice in Policing Long Island (UJPLI), is dedicated to ending racial disparities in traffic stops.

Our mission is to transform Suffolk County's harmful and unsuccessful traffic enforrcement strategy: a strategy that victimizes Black and Brown drivers.

The Data:

Context of racial disparities in traffic stops

Black people are 4.5 times more likely to be stopped by police than white people. Latino people face a similar injustice, being 2.3 times more likely to be stopped than their white counterparts.

A federal jury has found that the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) engages in a pattern and practice of civil rights violations, yet the department has failed to address these issues.
