Supported by our sister organizations—Long Island Advocates for Police Accountability (LIAFPA) and United for Justice in Policing Long Island (UJPLI)—the Safe Roads Suffolk County campaign is dedicated to exposing and transforming Suffolk County’s failing traffic enforcement strategy.

Suffolk continues to lead all other New York State counties in crash-related injuries and fatalities. The discretionary enforcement approach not only fails to prevent the loss of lives but also disproportionately targets Black and Latino drivers and passengers.

We are committed to challenging these harmful practices and advocating for a just, data-driven approach to traffic safety—one that truly protects all road users.

Safe and Fair Traffic Enforcement (SAFTE)
Across New York State, outdated and discriminatory traffic enforcement practices persist. That’s why we’re part of Safe and Fair Traffic Enforcement (SAFTE), a statewide campaign advocating for data-driven, equitable traffic safety policies that prioritize harm reduction over punitive policing.
One critical step toward this vision is the passage of Senate Bill 7111A, which would prohibit law enforcement officers from initiating traffic stops for certain minor violations—a reform that reduces unnecessary police interactions while keeping our roads safe.

The Data:
Context of racial disparities in traffic stops
Black people are 4.5 times more likely to be stopped by police than white people. Latino people face a similar injustice, being 2.3 times more likely to be stopped than their white counterparts.
A federal jury has found that the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) engages in a pattern and practice of civil rights violations, yet the department has failed to address these issues.
